Know Your Monstera Peru
Botanically known as Monstera karstenianum, the Monstera Peru is a tropical evergreen native to the rainforests of South America, belonging to the Araceae family and grown for its uniquely textured, deeply quilted, high-gloss foliage. Despite sharing the Monstera name, it produces none of the fenestrations or splits that its more famous relatives are known for. Instead, each leaf is small, intensely dark green, and deeply puckered in a way that makes it visually unlike almost any other houseplant. In the wild, it grows as an epiphyte, climbing up trees and other plants for support, drawing moisture and nutrients from the air and its surroundings. Monstera karstenianum is so distinct from other Monstera varieties that its classification has been debated among botanists for years, and it is still occasionally listed under the synonym Epipremnum peru in older references.
