About the Twin Cottage Coir Bird Nest

This nest is a wide, low box of pressed coconut coir with two round entrance holes side by side on the front. A flat roof sticks out over the entrances, keeping them shaded and dry. Cords at each end let it hang level from a hook, branch or balcony railing. The long chamber has room for more than one small bird, and the two openings give an easy way in and out. Coir lets air through, so the inside stays airy in warm weather. House sparrows are social birds that often nest near one another, so a roomy house like this suits them well, along with munias and other small garden birds. Hang it somewhere quiet and enjoy the busy comings and goings.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions
How long before birds move in?

Birds take their time. A pair may visit a new house for a few days or weeks before they settle in. Put it up early, leave it in one place, and you may soon see them carrying in grass and twigs.

Where should I put it up?

Above head height, on a wall, pillar or strong branch, in the shade and out of the rain. Keep it a little away from the feeder and out of reach of cats.

Should I put anything inside?

No, leave it empty. Birds like to build their own nest. A little dry grass or a few small twigs nearby is all they need.

How do I clean it?

Once the young birds have flown, take out the old nest and wipe the inside with plain water. Let it dry fully before the next pair moves in. No soaps or sprays.
