About the Safety Coir Bird Nest

This nest is woven from coconut coir into a rounded pouch that hangs from a long neck, with a wide tube-shaped tunnel sticking out from one side as the entrance. Birds go in through the tunnel to reach the chamber, which stays tucked away and out of sight, much like the hanging grass nests baya weavers build over fields and ponds. This is the feature that gives the nest its name. The neck ends in a loop, so it hangs from a hook, branch or balcony railing. Thick coir walls let air through and keep out wind and rain. It suits house sparrows, munias and other small garden birds looking for a private place to raise their chicks.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions
How long before birds move in?

Birds take their time. A pair may visit a new house for a few days or weeks before they settle in. Put it up early, leave it in one place, and you may soon see them carrying in grass and twigs.

Where should I put it up?

Above head height, on a wall, pillar or strong branch, in the shade and out of the rain. Keep it a little away from the feeder and out of reach of cats.

Should I put anything inside?

No, leave it empty. Birds like to build their own nest. A little dry grass or a few small twigs nearby is all they need.

How do I clean it?

Once the young birds have flown, take out the old nest and wipe the inside with plain water. Let it dry fully before the next pair moves in. No soaps or sprays.
