About the Hut Shape Coir Bird House

This bird house is made from thick coconut coir in the shape of a small round hut. A wide, domed roof sits over the walls like a cap, overhanging on all sides to keep rain away from the entrance hole below. A cord through the top lets you hang it from a hook, tree branch or balcony railing. The coir walls let air through, so the inside stays airy in the heat and sheltered when it is cool. It is sized for house sparrows, munias and similar small birds. Hang it a little above head height in a shaded, quiet spot, give it a few weeks, and you may notice birds peeking in to check it out before they move in.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions
How long before birds move in?

Birds take their time. A pair may visit a new house for a few days or weeks before they settle in. Put it up early, leave it in one place, and you may soon see them carrying in grass and twigs.

Where should I put it up?

Above head height, on a wall, pillar or strong branch, in the shade and out of the rain. Keep it a little away from the feeder and out of reach of cats.

Should I put anything inside?

No, leave it empty. Birds like to build their own nest. A little dry grass or a few small twigs nearby is all they need.

How do I clean it?

Once the young birds have flown, take out the old nest and wipe the inside with plain water. Let it dry fully before the next pair moves in. No soaps or sprays.
