About the Double Decker Coir Bird House

This bird house is a tall, upright block of pressed coconut coir with two round entrance holes, one near the top and one lower down. A small roof juts out over the upper entrance to keep rain off, and a cord on top lets you hang it from a hook, branch or balcony railing. The height gives birds plenty of room inside, with two ways in and out. Coir lets air through, so the house stays airy in summer and sheltered when it is cooler. It suits house sparrows, munias and other small garden birds. Hang it from a sturdy hook in a quiet corner, and it can become a regular stop for the small birds that already visit your balcony.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions
How long before birds move in?

Birds take their time. A pair may visit a new house for a few days or weeks before they settle in. Put it up early, leave it in one place, and you may soon see them carrying in grass and twigs.

Where should I put it up?

Above head height, on a wall, pillar or strong branch, in the shade and out of the rain. Keep it a little away from the feeder and out of reach of cats.

Should I put anything inside?

No, leave it empty. Birds like to build their own nest. A little dry grass or a few small twigs nearby is all they need.

How do I clean it?

Once the young birds have flown, take out the old nest and wipe the inside with plain water. Let it dry fully before the next pair moves in. No soaps or sprays.
